Mannar District, located in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka, is renowned for its unique coastlines, historical background, and indigenous culture. Unlike the coastlines in other districts, this coastline offers a more peaceful experience. The district is boarderd over 80 kilometers of coastline. The Thalai Mannar coast lies close to India and is believed to be the starting point of Adam’s Bridge (Ram Setu). Here, you can find shallow, calm sea and rare sea grass beds. Mannar town beach is an ideal place to observe the activities of the local fishing community. Arinthampe and Kuththape beaches also offer relatively undisturbed experiences. The coastal areas in Mannar District, along with their historical and cultural significance, provide opportunities to enjoy tranquil nature and the traditional local lifestyle.
Guided by the aim of having a ‘Clean Coastline – An Attractive Tourist Destination,’ the Clean Sri Lanka secretariat, in collaboration with Sri Lanka Army, launched a coastal cleaning campaign on 25th July 2025 covering 253 coastal areas across 14 districts Islandwide.
