A Clean Coastline in Ampara District – An Attractive Tourist Destination!

Ampara District, located in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka, is famous for its spectacular coastlines, especially the internationally renowned surfing spots and natural beauty. The district has more than 130 kilometers of coastline. The most famous and internationally recognized beach in Ampara is Arugam Bay, which is ranked among the top ten surfing destinations in the world. From May to November, surfers from around the globe come here.

Near the northern boundary of the district lies Pasikuda Beach, known for its shallow, calm, and clear waters. Unatuna Beach, located close to Yala National Park, is a relatively quiet and peaceful shoreline. The beaches of Ampara District offer a unique tourist experience, blending surfing sports with relaxing wildlife encounters.

With the objective of “A Clean Coastline – An Attractive Tourist Destination,” the Clean Sri Lanka program, together with Sri Lanka Army, conducted a coastal cleaning campaign on 29th July 2025, covering 253 coastal lines across 14 districts Islandwide.

Accordingly, coastal cleanups were carried out covering the following coastal areas in the Ampara District:

  1. Kalmunai Beach
  2. From Kathiv to Nindavur
  3. From Maradamunai to Kalmunai Beach
  4. Sinnamuhaththu Varam Beach
  5. Akkarapattu Beach
  6. Addalachchen/ Palamunai Beach
  7. Arugam Bay Beach
  8. Finot Farm Beach
  9. Whisky Point Beach
  10. Thirukkovil Beach
