Sri Lanka’s Batticaloa District, located in the Eastern Province, is renowned for its unique lagoon system, tranquil sea coasts, and distinctive cultural experiences. Since the end of the armed conflict, Batticaloa has emerged as a prime destination for tourists seeking peaceful coastal experiences. The district is bordered by over 80 kilometers of coastline.
Near Batticaloa town, Kallady Beach is the main coastal area, featuring the famous Kallady Bridge, also known as the Dancing Waves Bridge, which is a key landmark and main point of the district. To the north of the district lies Pasikuda Beach, internationally acclaimed for its shallow, crystal-clear waters, making it an attractive spot for visitors. Adjacent to Pasikuda is Kalkuda Beach, known for its pristine shoreline.
The extensive lagoon system surrounding Batticaloa town, along with its adjoining coasts, offers an excellent habitat for birdwatching and nature lovers. The coastal areas of Batticaloa provide visitors with a unique blend of a well-preserved lagoon environment, peaceful sea beaches, and rich local culture, creating a novel and serene experience.
With the objective of “A Clean Coastline – An Attractive Tourist Destination,” the Clean Sri Lanka program, together with the Sri Lanka Army, conducted a coastal cleaning campaign on 29th July 2025, covering 253 coastlines across 14 districts Islandwide.
Accordingly, coastal cleanups were carried out covering the following coastal areas in the Batticaloa District:

- Kalkuda coastal area
- Kafsanad coastal area
- Kaluwankeni coastal area
- Punnakuda coastal area
- Sowkkadi coastal area (Eravur)
- Kadiraveli fishing harbor area
- Vakare
- Kandal Adi
- Sallativu
- Mankeni temple vicinity
- Kayankeni
- Nasavanativu Kalappuwa area
- Naval Adi coastal area
- Katthankudi coastal area
- Kaludaweli coastal area
