Galle District, located on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, is one of the most beautiful tourist destinations along the southern coastline. Covering a land area of 3,845 square kilometers, the district is bordered by over 50 kilometers of coastline.
The main beaches in this district include Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa, Weligama, Dalawella, and Talpe. Unawatuna features a calm sea suitable for swimming, while Hikkaduwa is famous for surfing and snorkeling. Also Hikkaduwa is an excellent place to learn surfing and is also known for the traditional stilt fishing industry. The famous palm tree planting in Dalawella and the natural rock pools at Talpe have become popular tourist attractions.
The beaches in the Galle District offer great opportunities to enjoy water sports, nature, and local culture.
With the objective of “A Clean Coastline – An Attractive Tourist Destination,” the Clean Sri Lanka program, together with Sri Lanka Army, conducted a coastal cleaning campaign on 29th July 2025, covering 253 coastal lines across 14 districts Islandwide.
Accordingly, coastal cleanups were carried out covering the following coastal areas in the Galle District:

- From Dodanduwa to Rathgama Beach
- Beach in front of Boossa Junction
- Around Mahamodara Beach
- Beach in front of Galle Fort Lighthouse
- Unawatuna Beach
- Koggala Beach
- Beach near Bentota estuary
- Kaikawala Beach (Bentota)
- Brahmanwatta Beach (Balapitiya)
- Wellawatta Beach (Balapitiya)
- Patbadimulla Beach (Ambalangoda)
- Kosgoda Beach (Kosgoda)
- Ahungalla Beach (Ahungalla)
- Hirewatta Beach (Ambalangoda)
