Matara District, located in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka, is famous for its pristine and naturally beautiful coastlines. With over 40 kilometers of coastline, it is an ideal place for tourists seeking a peaceful experience.
Midigama Beach offers opportunities for surfing, while Weligama Beach is well-known for learning for surfing and the traditional stilt fishing industry. Mirissa Beach is internationally famous for whale watching. Tangalle and Polwaththa beaches are perfect for tranquil vacations, and Hummanaya Beach is special because of its natural blowhole.
With the objective of “A Clean Coastline – An Attractive Tourist Destination,” the Clean Sri Lanka program, together with Sri Lanka Army, conducted a coastal cleaning campaign on 29th July 2025, covering 253 coastal lines across 14 districts Islandwide.
Accordingly, coastal cleanups were carried out covering the following coastal areas in the Matara District:

- Thotamuna Beach
- South Thotamuna estuary Beach
- Weligama Beach
