Puttalam District, located in the North Western Province of Sri Lanka, is renowned for its unique coastlines and lagoon ecosystems. Unlike other districts, these coasts are closely connected with natural beauty, wildlife experiences, and the traditional lifestyle of local fishing communities. The district has over 100 kilometers of coastline.
Kalpitiya Peninsula, the most famous place in Puttalam District, is globally recognized for kitesurfing and dolphin and whale watching. The small nearby islands around Kalpitiya are excellent locations for coral reef diving and snorkeling.Marawila Beach is relatively pristine, and the Puttalam Lagoon shoreline offers great opportunities for birdwatching and nature lovers. The beaches in Puttalam District provide a variety of experiences beyond traditional coastal tourism.
With the objective of “A Clean Coastline – An Attractive Tourist Destination,” the Clean Sri Lanka program, together with Sri Lanka Army, conducted a coastal cleaning campaign on 29th July 2025, covering 253 coastal lines across 14 districts Islandwide.
Accordingly, coastal cleanups were carried out covering the following coastal areas in the Puththalam District:
