Clean Sri Lanka Launches Islandwide Mental Health Drive for Children Affected by Ditwah Cyclone

Under the Clean Sri Lanka program, a nationwide initiative has been launched to enhance the mental well being of children and other community members affected by the recent emergency disaster situation, with its pilot project commencing in the Badulla District. The program aims to support emotionally vulnerable groups, helping them regain strength and resilience in the aftermath of the “Ditwah” cyclone, which severely impacted many parts of Sri Lanka and left families temporarily housed in safety centers.

The inaugural program was launched yesterday at the safety center established at Morahena Maha Vidyalaya, located within the Meegahakiula Divisional Secretariat Division in the Badulla District. Implemented under the Clean Sri Lanka initiative, the effort focuses on improving the mental health of children and other displaced persons currently staying in safety centers by providing them with the courage and emotional support needed to rebuild their lives.

During the event, school supplies, exercise books, and toys for younger children, donated to the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat by generous individuals and institutions were distributed as gifts to children staying at the Morahena safety center. These contributions were intended to bring comfort, restore a sense of normalcy, and encourage the continuation of education despite the hardships caused by the disaster.

The program is conducted with the participation of experts in mental health, child psychology, community health, team building, soft skills development, and creative abilities. In addition, several foreign professionals who work in these fields have volunteered to join the initiative, offering their practical support in activities designed specifically for the children. Through interactive sessions and group work, they will help children express emotions, develop coping skills, and strengthen social bonds.

This initiative is scheduled to be conducted over two days at several safety centers across the Badulla District. By combining psychosocial support with material assistance, the Clean Sri Lanka program seeks to address both the emotional and practical needs of disaster affected communities, ensuring that recovery includes healing of the mind as well as rebuilding of homes and infrastructure.
