Under the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ programme, a vital conservation effort was successfully undertaken on 25th September 2025 involving marking and boundary demarcation along the 19-kilometer protected area of the historic Dambarawa Tank reservoir located in Mahiyanganaya.
The Dambarawa Tank features a large water spread area covering approximately 891 acres with an irrigable land area near 1487 acres. The reservoir is a crucial part of the Badulla Irrigation Division, connected to a network of canals and sluices, supporting agricultural activities around the region.
The conservation operation focused on safeguarding this significant reservoir, preventing encroachments, and maintaining the integrity of its catchment area. By clearly marking the reservoir's protected boundary, the operation aims to preserve both the ecological and cultural heritage of Dambarawa Tank.
Officials from the Department of Irrigation and local authorities highlighted the historical and functional importance of Dambarawa Tank in sustaining the agricultural economy and water management practices in Mahiyanganaya.
This initiative reinforces the commitment of the Clean Sri Lanka programme to protect the nation’s heritage infrastructure while promoting sustainable environmental practices for future generations.
