Under the Environmental Pillar of the Clean Sri Lanka Programme, and in line with the 2025 budget provisions, the program to demarcate reservoir boundaries associated with Deduru Oya was launched this morning (20th September) from the Ganewatta area.
The inauguration ceremony of this extensive environmental project was graced by the Hon. Dr. Namal Sudsarshana, Deputy Minister of Women and Child Affairs, Member of Parliament for Kurunegala District, and Chairman of the Ganewatta Divisional Coordination Committee, as the chief guest. Also present were Hon. Sujeewa Dissanayake, Member of Parliament for Kurunegala District and Chairman of the Wariyapola Divisional Coordination Committee. Engineer M. G. T. P. Dissanayake, Director of the Irrigation Department Kurunegala. Mrs. Niluja K. Jayawardhana, Secretary of Ganewatta Pradeshiya Sabha and Mr. Gihan Weerasundara, Director (Media) of the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat, among other distinguished guests.
Under this program, the Department of Irrigation will identify precise boundaries of the Deduru Oya reservoirs and mark them to protect them from unauthorized land grabs and illegal constructions. The main objective of this program is to prevent water source pollution and ensure the sustainable existence of the irrigation system in Sri Lanka.
This project stands out as an important step under the Environmental and Social Pillars of the "Clean Sri Lanka" program, initiated under the President’s concept and direct guidance. The Deduru Oya project is part of a large-scale program initiated with a budget of Rs. 100 million to conserve 23 reservoir systems across the country.
