The Maskeliya Pradeshiya Sabha has begun sorting approximately 7,000 kilograms of non-biodegradable waste collected from Siripa Maluwa, surrounding areas, and the precipice site. Under the Clean Sri Lanka initiative's "Samanolasiiri-Haritha Wandana" program, the waste is being categorized into plastics, polythene, glass, and other materials ahead of recycling, with sorted plastics slated for sale to private companies.
This effort, launched on November 25th as a Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat project, aims for complete removal of accumulated non biodegradable waste from these locations. The initial phase mobilized 35 personnel, including Sri Lanka Army Commandos and regular soldiers, while the second phase engaged around 150 participants from the Army, Police, and volunteer groups.
The Nuwara Eliya District Secretariat provided essential support to ensure the program's success. This initiative demonstrates coordinated action to manage disaster-related waste, promoting environmental recovery and sustainable practices in the region.
